Its invasive nature and lack of efficacy often led patients down a path of unnecessary procedures and discomfort.Thankfully, advancements in understanding peptic ulcers have shifted treatment paradigms towards more effective and humane approaches.Saif Shahabnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4723755846699098373.post-70226625492682554022018-05-22T01:35:00.938-07:002018-05-22T01:35:00.938-07:00Speaking of colourful characters, you reminded me ...Speaking of colourful characters, you reminded me of my favourite thoracic surgeon, a kind and utterly delightful man who used to slip out onto the verandah and frantically smoke a cigarette or two in between seeing patients ... He died of lung cancer. Go figure. He was a much adored medico at our hospital.

Pity your Dr Sippy didn't make it to our Vascular Surgery Ward - we were the bee's knees at fixing blocked carotids. One of the surgeons had an entire wall of nicely plaqued bits of carotid arteries pickled in jars decorating his office off the ward. Made a change from art works I suppose... Dr. Bertram Sippy the originator of the "Sippy Diet" treatment was a Chicagoan who practiced at Cook County Hospital. There was a bust of him on display near the old Cook County Hospital main entrance.

He died of a massive MI in his fifties and it was speculated that he consumed too much of his own "medicine" which was whole cream or 1/2 and 1/2. He might have temporarily relieved his ulcer pain, but all that dairy fat clogged up his coronary arteries.

Dr. Marshall finally won a Nobel Prize in 2005 for discovering H Pylori. At least they had enough discretion in Sweden to overlook Dr. Sippy for the big prize.Oldfoolrnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01747485143127099085noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4723755846699098373.post-16379067899438858802018-05-21T03:53:43.857-07:002018-05-21T03:53:43.857-07:00This got me looking up about Dr Barry Marshall and...This got me looking up about Dr Barry Marshall and I didn't know he deliberately infected himself with H Pylori so he could prove antibiotics could cure it - and later travelled to the USA as he knew it was vital that the American medical establishment there recognized his findings. Apparently he didn't even tell his wife he had deliberately infected himself (by drinking an H Pylori infected broth). Fascinating stuff. Sue.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
