How fortunate the ortho surgeon was there. I was always amazed by the cool, calm, and collected demeanor of some seriously injured trauma patients.
I can almost picture that hearty farmer walking in with his mangled hand. Some people are impressively strong. He told us he got his hand caught in a corn auger machine and he held up a blackened claw-like appendage that used to be his right hand. The stench of burned flesh quickly filled the hall-way. We got him into the trauma room and debated how to get all of his winter outdoor layers off without disturbing his brittle looking black "claw". In the end the trauma shears came out, but when we encountered a down filled layer the area suddenly exploded with feathers! I had the immedeate impulse to blow off the feathers sticking to the hand but stopped myself just in time. Our traveling orthopedic surgeon happened to be in our little rural hospital that day and he immediately took him to surgery for an above-the-elbow amputation. Housekeeping was curious why I requested that they bring a vacuum cleaner for an ER discharge clean-up.

PMortishahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12444519197255903625noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4723755846699098373.post-31374111119576646572015-05-26T18:11:09.669-07:002015-05-26T18:11:09.669-07:00The olfactory stimulation you describe does really...The olfactory stimulation you describe does really imprint on your memory. I can remember smells from 40+ years ago like it was yesterday, but can never remember the date. When you combine sensations like stench and squishy they potentiate each other in your memory.

Perhaps my perspective is narrow, but in my experience drugs and alcohol cause far more suffering than cancer or cardiovascular disease.

Thanks for your comment.Oldfoolrnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01747485143127099085noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4723755846699098373.post-49697486187833569802015-05-26T16:51:04.898-07:002015-05-26T16:51:04.898-07:00So far the worst thing I have seen is a patient wh...So far the worst thing I have seen is a patient who "skin popped" heroin. The stench in his room from the rotting flesh was bad enough but his dressing changes took a full two hours as he had wrecked pretty much all 4 extremities. The worst part of it was how much damage he had done, every time I grasped an appendage it was kind of like grabbing a badly bruised apple, there were spots that just went "squish" under my fingers.
